28/29 Warford in a 31 AA

Awhile back I installed a 28/29 warford in a 31 AA, it's a bit noisy but it works good except that it's apparently leaking (or forcing) gear oil into the 4 speed transmission.

After about a 75 mile trip I find the (Snyder's 600 wt) gear oil level in the warford to be down about 8 ounces and the level in the 4 speed to be about 8 ounces over filled.

I don't think Im missing any seals as I don't see any in the parts list other than gaskets and the rope seal on the rear support. I did determine the fill hole on the warford is about 2 inches higher than the fill hole on the 4 speed, which makes me wonder if the oil is just trying to equalize between the 2 gear boxes? (It does have to be driven, just sitting makes no difference in the levels)

Has anyone else with a warford had this situation? would sealed bearings fix it? Do I need thicker oil? Do I just let it seek it's own level and hope it's not too low?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

John

My 3 spd is on the bench like yours, it is easy to see that the bottom of the filler plug hole lines up with the center of the input shaft which means oil will run out for sure. Look inside the input shaft housing 2041A and see if there is what I will call an oil washer dam 2034, they call it a bearing retainer but not really. I just sandblasted my 29 AA frame so it was easy to measure the angle of the cross member that the rear of the 3 spd bolts to, mine was 4*. Now tilt yours 3 spd back 4* on your bench and use a 2' carpenters level on bottom of filler hole and you will see the oil level will be much lower on input shaft. When I took my 3 spd apart I removed the oil dam 2034 sandblasted everything then applied permatex to it and tapped into place with socket and extention.
hope this helps nick c

That could help a lot Nick, I can see how it could be a problem if you were missing this "oil washer dam" ( 2034 bearing retainer) and it might very well be the root of my issue. unfortunately the 3 speed is no longer on the bench but installed in the vehicle so I can't easily look for it.
I'm guessing the washer sits in front of the main drive gear front bearing (part no 1250) down in the front of the input shaft housing (part no. 2041A) ?
I didn't realize the box is sitting at 4* that's got to lower the level at the input shaft as you state so at least I've got that going for me but without the washer (assuming I don't have one) it may not be enough.
I wonder also if the oil is being augered through the housing into the the 4 speed.
Thanks a ton and a half!

Do your brakes work OK using the stock ford cross shaft?

I had to modify the stock brake shaft but made no other changes and it stops at least as good as the original shaft.
sorry for the late reply

Correction: I did have to also swap out one of the brake rod levers with the doglegged lever from a '29 AA cross shaft.
