Wood hydraulic hoist pump
Wood hydraulic hoist pump
I have a Wood hydraulic pump and hoist on the '31 AA I am restoring. Does anyone know where to find a schematic of the pump, as well as where to find parts? Also, the PTO driveline from the transmission to the pump needs universal joints. The joints on the driveline (I'm assuming these are original or NOS) have ball bearings instead of the more modern cross and cap with needle bearings. Where could I find these ball bearing u-joints?
Re: Wood hydraulic hoist pump
I've worked on a lot of equipment with hyd systems. If your pump has been out of use for many years, you might soak it in a bucket of diesel fuel for a few days, I made an adapter that goes from a 1/2" drill chuck to the pump shaft, the pump will turn clockwise, then you will know which side is supply and suction. I would install the pump, find out if it works, if not take it to a repair shop.

Thanks Nick. I'm assuming I can drain the hydraulic oil and fill the pump with diesel while it's still mounted to the truck frame. When connected to the 1/2 inch drill, can the pump be tested with the diesel as the fluid or does the pump need to be drained, washed, and refilled with hydraulic oil prior to testing?

I am not positive but to me if you are to soak it in a bucket of diesel fuel it would have to be removed.

Is this the pump you have?

If the hydraulics have not been in use for a long time, I would remove it and soak it in diesel. The diesel fuel is too thin to test for pressure. If you remove the cylinder and take it apart, you may be surprised how much sludge is in it. If it has a reservoir, clean it out, look for a filter or screen somewhere.

Bob,
That's my pump. Are there any more pages to that booklet that are of significance to the pump? The only difference I can see from the illustration is the mechanical portion of the hoist (I think I have an earlier version) and the illustration has a more modern looking universal joint in the PTO driveline.
Thanks for the help.

Near the back of the Body Parts List "A" & "AA" April 1932 There are pictures and part numbers of all the dump parts.
On page 219 it has a picture that looks like the u-joint you have. There are two copies of this book. The one by Polyprints is
5.5" X 8.5" and has very clear pictures the one by Lincoln Publishing is 8.5" X 11" but the pictures are not very good.

My PTO u-joints are different. When I get back to the shop, I'll take a photo and submit to the forum. Not a big deal if I can't replace them. I'll put modern u-joints in their place.

I don't know if this would work for your application or not.

Re: Wood hydraulic hoist pump
Thank you to Chris and Bob for both sharing the Ebay offering of the PTO driveline. I think all I need is the universal joints, so I'll start with adapting some new ones. Keep the suggestions coming.
