Speedo drive gear help

Post by Wmegilljr »

Well I worked on the truck for almost 9 hours today with out stopping and it paid off! Truck is running great, all the lights now work, changed engine and trans oil. But i have an issue with getting the Speedo to work. I ordered a drive gear from mikes that will not work not knowing that the A and the AA are very different in regards to how they are assembled. I think what I need is part number AA-17271-FR. That is for the low speed axle with the round slotted output, round tabed Speedo cable going to the oval Speedo.

Question is where can I find one!? Snyder's only has a high speed square drive for the round Speedo.

The truck has a 1930+ low speed bevel gear dually rear.

Someones gotta have a low speed bevel gear uhh gear haha. No demand at all for low speed parts. Or call Berts in denver - they would probably have one.

I have a couple of these if you still need one. $20 plus shipping, $35 for both gears.

Maybe I didn't understand what you're looking for. Are you referring to the gears on the driveshaft or something else? Anyway, I have the gear that fits onto the driveshaft and the driven gear that drives the speedo cable. You have to pull the rear end back to replace the driving gear. There's a retainer clip in front of the driving gear (sometimes this is missing and I don't think you really need it anyway).

That's exactly what I need. The gear is on the drive shaft, I am missing the one the goes to the cable. But i will take the whole set. Please pm me your info and how you want to handle it. Thank you so much!

He's looking for gears for the 6.6 bevel gear axle not the 7.17 worm drive gears.

Bob, my understanding is that it will work and be much closer than the 5.17 gear.

from another site

AA-17271-E Speedometer driven gear (Service). Stamped 7.17 or 7.25 on face. AA-17285-E Speedometer driving gear (Service). Used on AA chassis with worm or bevel axles “low speed” of 7 .25 to 1 ratio for worm and 7 .17 to 1 ratio for bevel axles.

AA-17271-E has 18 teeth and is same type as AA-17271-D. Outside diameter of gear is 1.005/1.008. AA-17285-E has 4 teeth. Outside diameter is 1.744/1.746.

It may work but the 7.17 ratio bevel gear they are talking about in the one in
the picture not the 6.6 1930-31 type.

FYI - Based on my research - A 1930 AA with an oval speedometer and with a 6.6:1 rear axle would have speedometer driven gear with a slotted shaft under part AA-17271-F as you indicate. This speedometer gear would have 17 teeth and have a 0.955 OD. Drive gear AA-17285-G was used with this driven gear (4 teeth and 1.795 OD). Other speedometer gear parts will not interchange.

If the AA-17271-F can not be found, then AA-17271-G could be used if the speedometer shaft could have the keyed end changed to a square end. Maybe a speedometer shop can do this.

Sorry, I don't know a source for what you are looking for.
Regards, Neil Wilson
