29 express spare wheel mount.

Post by bobmay1 »

When I bought a early 30 express truck it came with a front fender mounted spare tire mount that was installed next to the box (side mount). They cut out a section of the box to make it work - ouch! Over the last 4 years I have searched for the right side mount with no luck. I did find two front fender mounts to go with the one I already had. Looking on the AA truck web site I found Neil’s “wheel Carrier Side Installation #3 - 89A” which detailed all the info I needed to make one from the front fender ones I had. This morning I set out to try it. First I mounted one to the frame and heated it to bend it to the right angleImageImage. After this the top was at the wrong angle - so I heated at the bend to get it in the right orientation.

This left the side carrier 2 3/4 inches to tall. I cut a section out and beveled the edges in preparation for welding.ImageImageImage
Then mounted it and tacked it to make sure she was right. When every thing was aligned I welded it up and ground it clean.ImageImageImageImageImage

Wow - that is great. An original carrier for a 1929 AA express is about impossible to find. Let us know how the tire fits once the express body and running board are installed.

Fit looks really good as distance from running board is same thickness as tires on truck.

Does someone have measurements of the straight horizontal run of an original up to where it starts to curve up as measured from the out side of the frame? The one I made did not go thru the hole in splash apron like it should. It was a little high as it was curving upward. I think I need to add in a short piece there.
