This is the second replacement of my prior statement based on my 6/8/18 post below (the original limit was 504 KB, then 994 KB, and now 1.4 MB):

In testing different photo sizes allowed on this forum, I find that the photo file size of 1.4 MB can be used.
I found I could add the file five times. When adding it for the 6th time, nothing happens.

file size = 1.4 MB

I could add five files at 1.4 MB

The limit is actually 1Mb, so not sure why you can only attach a 504Kb file. 3 images is the limit for an individual post.

The information displayed in your post is showing the maximum file size is 1 MiB not MB. An Internet search of "MiB" was not helpful (Greek to me). From most user's perspective "MiB" has no meaning. And, I don't see a way to access the information you have shown? It must be only available to admins? Is there a way to use the drop down to pick "MB" or "KB" as the file size.

1 MB would be 1000 KB. So, that would mean a file size of 1000 KB would be accepted. I tested attaching a photo larger than 504KB and get a message that the file is too large???????????????

Also, it looks like the number is files could be changed to allow more attachments. A few more would be helpful.

i learned something today too essentially its the binary version of the x10^6 suffix "mega" so MiB stands for "mebibyte".

Still strange for a website setting lol.

And yes Mikes screenshot is of the website settings that us pesants cannot see.

But yes if its set to 1 MiB it should allow a pic up to 1024Kb (or just over 1 MB)...

EDIT:

i just ran into this problem too - pic uploader would accept a 323KB pic but not a 612kb pic. Status had a yellow triangle next to it and said failed to move file...Both are/were .JPGs...

Mike - do you have a max image size set too low and max file size set too high so they are interfering with most pics? (meaning file size is below the 1MB but pic size is above max pic size so it wont upload)

The lower case 'i' is what is confusing the terminology. The forum software is a bit unusual in that respect, also the default language is UK English so that may be why the size terms are a bit off.

The end result is pretty much the same, 1 MiB is 1024 KiB, or 1,048,576 Bytes, or 1MB.

One mebibyte (MiB) is 2 / 20th power, i.e. 1024 × 1024 bytes, or 1048576 bytes. Despite its official status, the unit mebibyte is not commonly used even when reporting byte counts calculated in binary multiples, but is often represented as megabytes. Formally, one megabyte denotes 1000 × 1000 bytes.
I'm not enforcing size limits at all, other than when a thumbnail is generated (and what it's size in pixels would be).

hmm weird. Like i said i had issues uploading a 612kb jpg file yesterday but not a 323kb file. Had to shrink the 612 file to under 500 for it to work.

Theres no weird settings for different file types are there? (like jpg, bmp, etc)

I see in your max file size if set to zero is limited by your php config - is that the issue? Is the php limiting on top of what you set it?

PHP limit isn't a factor, I've got it set to 20MB. The default php file upload limit is 2MB if you don't have it set explicitly. I'll run some tests this weekend and see what comes up.

Ok, here's an interesting thing.

Figured what the heck and would set the image size to 2048 KiB (2MB) and see what happens.
After I save the config the software shows the setting at 2 MiB.

I did increase the number of images per post to 5.

tEST PICs:

1.2mb file FAILED
714KB file was accepted
863kb file was accepted
1MB file FAILED
947KB file was accepted

Looks like its better but still wont take 1MB but will take 947KB. (pic is of the factory water pump out of my 95 s10 with 215K miles on it)

Yeah it's odd they would even use KiB or MiB in the first place! I'd like to move the forums to vbulletin, but there is no direct path from phpbb3 to vb4 or vb5, but eventually I'll probably have to in order to keep my sanity. I am running a much larger forum on vbulletin 3.8 and it would be nice to only manage one forum software package!

We appreciate your continuation of this forum and efforts to resolve this strange issue. I asked one of my IT techy friends what it may be and he chucked and thought phpBB forums were dead But as a crude work around if you set max upload to 3 MiB would it allow us to go past 1mb file size I wonder?

phpBB should be dead, but it does keep on trucking along. Though every update I've had to run on this software never goes without a hitch, and I've been doing this Sysadmin thing for nearly 30 years! I rarely have issue with updating my vbulletin system, it is quite large with over 20k members and almost a million posts.

I may just have to bite the bullet and import phpbb3 to vb3, then move the vb3 system up to vb5. I've been working on my other forum to move it from vb3.8 to vb5 and it is quite the process (last test was 20 hrs to migrate the data).

I just found that I can add five attachments with a file size of 1.4 MB. So, I am updating my original post.
