Ring and pinion gear set question

I'm working on a 1937 Twin Coach city bus,it got different size tires and wheels years ago and now the gear ratio is out of wack, the mid 30's 1 1/2 ton truck has the same rear axle housing and hubs, but I had been told that the pinion shaft is splined while the one I have is tapered, does anyone have a parts breakdown on the mid to late 30's rear axle.

Thanks
Aaron

Does it have a Ford Chassis and is it open or closed drive line??
Picture would help.

No Chassis, monococ construction, rear end is off set big time, 13 inches of tube on drivers side, passenger side is 13 inches longer, pinion points straight up and has a double ujoint and then a slip in the down drive transmission, my pinion is tapered, housing and hubs are the same as mid 30's ford truck with full floating axles.

1940-47 ford used a pinion with a taper. Is this picture similar to your bus?

This picture is for 1948-52 but the 1940-47 is similar.

Thank you.
Yes that is the type, without the center door, the one I'm working on is the 23 R.
The housings look the same but my hubs look like the 34's, this axle is set up for air brakes but thats just a backing plate to spider change, not a big deal.

What gear ratios were available for those rears, this one is set up with a 5:14 I want it slower, orginally these came with 7:00 18 tires and wheels, someone put 8:25:20's on and that seems to have geared it way too fast.
Here is what the numbers are for the coach ratio's none of which are available.

Well I've never heard of anybody wanting to go slower but they made a 6.6:1 gear set.

These have a 3 spd down drive trans,no way to put an aux box or two spd rear, orginal engine was a 6 cyl Hercules someone changed it to a 264 V-8 Buick, no low end torque and not enough power to pull the bus now in 3rd gear, plus with the tire and wheel change its geared really fast, its not going to see highways, park and town trips I haul the toys to where the show is so no need for highway driving long distance.
Any chance of a part number for the ring and pinion set, you diagram just gives the unit num,ber but not the indivudal part #'s.

Thanks

I found the bus listed in a 1956 Warner Gear catalog. It shows a Timken 53520 rear axle but the 5.14 ring gear they show is 34258 and the one you
show is 34456 the pinion they show is 34271 and you show 34479 no other ratios are listed for that axle. The catalog shows a 53169 axle that
uses the same 5.14 gears and they list a 6.6. Ring gear 34264 Warner number WX1952 pinion 34279 Warner number WX1953.
I looked up the Timken Axle in the Hollander Interchange and they have a note Ring gear same as 1934-47 Ford 1 1/2 ton use pinion from trucks
listed below (they list some trucks but they are probably as rare as the bus, the some likely are 34-38 GMC T18, 35-38 T16H GMC, 37-38 F16H and F18,
and 38-46 AC and CC GMC) If Ford pinion is used you must machine splines to tapered type.
Ford shows two ring and pinions 34-39 6.6 to 1 33 teeth and 37-47 6.67 to 1 40 teeth.
There seems to be some conflicting information so take this all with a grain of salt.

Bob, can you e-mail me a ph #, I think the set up for the 34/39 might work, why couldn't i just use a splined yoke instead of putting a taper to the pinion.
Thank you

Bob,I can't get the pdf of the gear set from job lot to post for some reason I'll get it figured out tomorrow.
I did a search for the gear ratio chart you told me about but haven't found that either.
