1930 AA 4 SPEED SHIFT TOWER

Post by rfj52 »

Does anyone know what factory spec for shift tower is. My trans is rebuilt and when I was rebuilding it everything looked OK in shift tower (no excessive wear visibly). I have about 6 inches of movement between 1st and 3rd positions just seems like a lot . trans shifts OK.

I just finished rebuilding my 4 speed tower. It is mounted on a wooden test stand while I complete the work on the transmission. I have not actually measured the amount of travel from first to second or third to fourth, but it’s a lot of movement. Your measurement of 6 inches seems to be about what I have. It reminds me of the 1969 F100 4WD I used to drive with the creeper low first gear, you thought you would hit your knuckles on the dashboard when you put it into first. Going from 1 to 2 seemed like a huge distance. My rebuilt AA 4 speed on my test stand reminded me of that driving experience. I have never driven a AA in good shape so I don’t have a valid AA comparison. However, it goes click- click smoothly and the rectangular pocket formed by the forks isn’t worn at all. I think we are good.

Did I misunderstand? Do you mean shift knob movement of 6 inches left to right when it is in gear, 1st or 3rd?
