Paint pattern for 1931

Post by wild4679 »

Does anyone know if Ford built AA's in '31 with custom paint jobs? In addition to the contrasting color of the fenders/running boards/rain skirts, would it be period correct if there was two tone colors on the hood/cowl/cab or accent colors for the trim?

If the answer is yes, a reference to some pictures of original restorations would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

From my understanding ford would paint the color a custom color upon request (and $$$). But period correct it could be anything and everything the business wanted their trucks to look like so id imagine somewhere at some point they had 2 tone paint jobs.

If you want to enter your AA for judging, then the answer is basically no to your question. Page E-83 of the RGJS identifies 58 colors for 1931. This is a publication you should have for judging type restoration.

There is a foot note on E-82 as follows:

At extra cost, fleet owners could have used any non-Ford color scheme. To use a non-Ford color scheme for judging (body and/or chassis), a variance must be submitted and approved by the appropriate Judging Standards Committee. This request is to include documentation (text and/or photographs) identifying the fleet owner and their paint scheme used during the AA production period. Any non-Ford color would have been a paint type and color available on the market at that time.

For non-judging purposes, then being "period correct" would need to be better defined as to what your definition is. I am guessing you mean in the 1930's. What some owner might have done in the 1930's could have been most anything (but using paint type and color available to them).

You will likely find most any color schemes on today's refurbished AA's. For "original restorations" you will find what is documented in the RGJS document. Most folks are refurbishing their AA's. Photos showing 1930's AA's will normally be black and white.

The attached looks like an original fleet owners color scheme to me.
