frame paint removal

I am about to prepare the frame on my '31 for repainting. Is it necessary to remove the existing paint to bare metal and start over? Or, can the prep be limited to removing loose paint and using a pre-paint wash? If the paint must be removed, what have others done to make this easier? I have the option of hauling the frame to a sandblaster, and could I could have it done for under a couple hundred bucks.

Note: A quick pass through my shop and one would realize I'm not a perfectionist.

I would think you could do a pretty serviceable job with a wire brush and putty knife, but it would be tedious as the AA's have a lot of square inches to them. Power grinder with cupped wire and knotted wire wheels would help speed it up some too.
I had my two daughters help me out with mine and we were pretty much done by the time they got bored with the project.
Good luck!

To answer your question I would need to know the type of paint that is on it now and what you want to put on it. If it's factory paint then just scuff it up real good and go from there.
