Went over to a friends shop this afternoon and he helped me press my new worm on the shaft. We didn’t have a regular floor model press but rigged one up with a pipe, some angle and a bottle jack. Concerned with bending the shaft; so we packed sand around the shaft inside the pipe. It worked great.

All back together and adjusted. Now for work on column and steering wheel.

So? what is the 'process' for making all the adjustments? First the worm bearings? so they just are free, then the side set screw just to take up all the side to side slack. Then the offset one to bring the sector gear into the worm with close to zero slop?? Looking for some experienced guidance.

I followed the procedure in Les Andrew’s book. Took a few trial and error attempts to get the sector adjustment with the eccentric cone. It would change when I torqued the housing bolts, but finally got it just right. Finished putting column together this afternoon. Progress! Cleaned and painted inside frame channel where it bolts. Will need new ball on pitman arm. Hopefully I can put it in the truck tomorrow and get her in the garage.
