1930 AA157 Platform 185-A

Post by Neil Wilson »

I am in the process of researching the 1930 AA157 platform 185-A for an article to go into the 2008 club newsletter.

Attached is a Ford archive picture of the 1930 long wheel base stake truck. The stake body is the 185-A platform and the 186-A stake racks. The platform is a very different construction make up than the short wheel base platform and the 1931 long wheel base platform.

At this time, I know of three of these 185-A platforms. One is in my back yard. I would like to hear from anyone out there who has one of these platforms.

If anyone has the corresponding stake racks, please let me know as I want to research these racks in the future.

On the one that you have are the side rails one piece or are they two pieces put together. I have a long platform frame that the side rails are made from two pieces but it is done so well I question if it was an owner modification. I plan to cut it down to fit my 131" truck but don't want to cut up something I shouldn't.

Here is a picture showing the top rear corner. The side stake pocket assembly consists of 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" angle with stake pockets riveted to the side and a rail riveted to the stake pockets. Between pockets, there are rivets through the rail and angle with a round spacer (not shown in the picture).

The rear stake pocket assembly is the same except the angle is 2-1/2" x 3". The rail at the rear wraps around the corner and is riveted to the side rails (the picture shows two temporary bolts I installed).

If your platform is like this, please post some pictures.

Neil
That is an unusual design.
No. Mine is not like that.
When I get a chance to take some decent closeup pictures I will post them and see what you or others think. I suppose what I have is a platform that has been extended but would like to have some other opinions on it.

Thanks Richard

Neil,

A bit off the subject here, but what color do you think that truck is? The grey of the cab in the B&W photo looks quite light for Rock Moss Green.

Matt,
I don't know what the color is. But, it is a light color. As can be seen the cargo body is painted the same as the cab. I also noticed that the cargo mounting bracket at the front of the sill is body color. So, the platform must have been completely assembled before painting. The u-bolts appear to be black. I have a high resolution picture which allows me to zoom in on. The lighting is not good for this picture.

It is kind of hard to tell from this photo but it looks like it has the later 31 style wheels on it.

The lighting is poor and details are hard to see. I zoomed in on the rear wheels and could see a date of 11-30. These are 30-31 wheels (see the location of the vent holes. The 31-33 wheels have the vent hole move close to the rim (in addition to the reinforcement rib stamping). Attached is a closer look.

This is just a follow up. Does anyone out there have a 185-A platform body for the 1930 AA157 chassis?
