Steering wheel, and a name

Post by David R. »

I’ve never been prone to giving my vehicles names, but this AA came with one. The steering gear was missing but it had a steering wheel in the pile of parts loaded on it. Scratched in one of the arms on the steering wheel in big block letters it says ELMER.
The tapered hole in the wheel was very rusty so I fixed me up a tapered hone with a piece of pine board and some 320 sand paper. I whittled and filed the board to fit the tapered hole then sawed a kerf down the middle. I cut a little cone of the 320 paper, wrapped the cone and tucked the ends in the saw kerf. Cleaned up nicely.

Talk about provenance, that's great, nice technique with the hone too, thanks for sharing those.
