1931 AA Rear Leaf Spring Orientation

Hi,

Can someone help me with the orientation of the rear leaf spring please.

When I disassembled my rear leaf springs to sandblast and paint them, I did not realize that the center bolt hole was off center in the lower (longer) leaves.

The longest leave (with the bolt bushings) measures from one end to the center bolt ~18-1/2" and the other side from end to bolt center hole measures ~19-1/2".

I am not sure which side should face forward; the longer side or the shorter side.

Thanks!

Dave

If you have the longer spring shackles then the longer end of the spring goes to the front.

According to the Judging Standards and Restoration Guidelines,

"The tie bolt of a spring leaf stack was not centered end to end. The longer section of the assembly was to the rear except for the AA-5560-E
and AA-5560-F springs. "

The AA-5560-E springs were used on the Funeral Coach, Ambulance, Panel Delivery, Police Patrol and Deluxe Delivery.
The AA-5560-F springs were used on buses.

The 5560-E and F springs were both 48" long

Having a copy of the Service Bulletins book and the Judging Standards are a very handy thing to have, even if you are not going for a fine point restoration. Both books contain valuable information on what parts are correct, and how they are assembled. They are well worth the cost.

Thank you both!

My AA is an 82B with an 88-A platform with the shorter spring shackles.

So the longer side of the rear leaves will be to the rear!
