Universal Joint & drive Shaft Mounting Help

Post by dlevy »

Hi,

I have a 1931 AA.

My rear u-joint, which has a 10x10 splines each side, has a fair amount of play in it.

Does anyone have a replacement u-joint or is there a rebuild kit available?

Also, I bought a gasket for the rear u-joint cover from Snyders. It came with a thin metal shim. I am not sure how to know if I need a shim or if it even applies to my AA.

Thanks,
Dave

I don't think you need it on the 1930-31 trucks, it was introduced the end of January 1929.
See page 311 of the Service Bulletins.

Thank you.

Any thoughts on the U-joint? What are people doing to resolve the play in bad joints?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with the specific u-joints of the 31 AA but in the 28/29 u-joints side to side play is fine. It is the rotational play (slop) that is not a good thing.
What type of looseness are you experiencing with yours?

So it looks like no parts being reproduced for these?
I will have to make my own?

How are you going to make repair parts?

My bushings are worn (you can see the gap to the right in the picture) and cracked. I hope that the yoke is OK and the bushings are the expendable parts.

I am surprised that this is not a bigger concern with AA owners. Seems like a part that many people would need to replace.

I wonder if there is a crossover to similar bushings with needle bearings.

I haven’t crossed that bridge yet, but I am sure I will need to. Especially if the u-joint is as worn out as everything else I’ve encountered on this truck. I am thinking turn new bushings out of 1018 on lathe and case harden?
