Early mirror disassembly

I have an early A-17727 mirror assembly Design 1 as shown in the pictures below. It has the mirror retainer frame that is pressed inside of the mirror retainer case. I want to restore it, but I'm not sure how best to disassemble the retainer frame without damaging the frame or the case. Is it best to break the mirror and pry the frame from the inside?

My suggestion - break/remove the mirror glass, heat the outer cover edge to break up rust, use a 90 degree angle tool to gently pry out the rim a little at a time. The 90 degree tool could be a wide bladed crow bar with the end ground to a curve matching the case. This would give a prying surface of about 1-1/2". Could use wd-40 (or similar) rather than heat. Or use both.
