Curtain side top material

Post by David R. »

I am trying to understand how to build the roof up on a recreated aftermarket body. It was a AA curtain side or huckster style body. I will frame it and cover top with closely laid slats. My question is what material would be correct for top. I read in judging standards for mail trucks that top was white canvas sailcloth filled and painted gloss black. In York Hoover's description of their curtain side AA body that the top was of duck canvas, enameled. Could that be recreated? What type paint would you use? I remember one of my old bosses talking about replacing tops on bread trucks in 20's with canvas painted with linseed oil.
Also would you need a layer of padding or some tyoe underlayment? Not finding much information on fabric tops for these type bodies.
