Worm drive tag

I’m diving in to the disassembling, inspection, and restoring the worm drive rear axle on my late 1928 AA. There is a round tag hanging from the safety wire on the bolts for the tube to differential housing. Does anyone know what this might be for? There are no numbers or letters stamped in the tag, so I assume there was probably an information decal on the tag at one time. Didn’t know if this was placed on there at the factory or if it was to show some kind of service work performed in field?
Thanks,
Doug

It may be to show the gear ratio has been changed from what is stamped on the housing.. So you will have to check the ratio. Can do via counting drive shaft rotations to wheel rotation. Be sure to keep the tag!!!

Or, if the speedometer is accurate, look at the ratio stamped on the speedo drive gear.

The housing is stamped with the letter “B” to indicate the 5.17:1 gear ratio. Truck is equipped with the dual high option, so I would assume that the gear ratio is the high speed. I’m wondering if the end cap for the screw thrust bearing was replaced under a recall? The safety wire was not on the four bolts? I’ll know more once it is apart! :!:

The '30/'31 High Speed units had a brass tag. Some with a number and others without.

I finally got it disassembled and counted number of teeth. Ring gear has 31 teeth and the pinion(worm gear) has 6 which yields 5:17:1gear ration, high speed gear. Still guessing what the brass tag was for?

I've seen a blank one like yours on a worm drive rear end too.

Must be something to it! It would be interesting to know the purpose.
