88-A Platform Bed Questions

Hi,

I have 2 questions on the 88-A platform bed. I am rebuilding mine.

I would really appreciate it if someone with an 88-A could get 2 pictures and measurements.

#1
On the last crossmember (#6) AA-88097-B, does the crossmember rest on the wood side sills (AA-88030 d3) or does is sit above them. If it sits above them, what is the gap distance?

#2
How wide is the space from the end of the the floor board support (right angle metal strip on the inside of cross member #6) and the inside edge of the #6 crossmember ?

Please see the below pictures for a more clear representation of what I am asking.

Thanks,
Dave

The sill has sill plates between the sill and each cross member (including the #6 cross member) - see https://aafords.com/open-bodies/platfor ... tails/#fsa

The support is 1-1/2" (#6 cross member to inside edge). The is the same as the #6 cross member upper flange. The boards fit between the support and top flange. The floor boards have a notch on the top so that they are flush with the top of the top flange.

Please see the below pictures for a more clear representation of what I am asking.

Thanks,
Dave

Thank you Neil!

Just to clarify the sill plates on a 1931 d3 88-A platform.

It looks to me that:

Sill plate AA-88064 (5-7/8" long with the U-bolt hook) was used under cross members 1, 2, 5
Sill plate AA-88066 (4" long rectangular flat plate) was used under cross members 3, 4, 6
Sill plate AA-88062 was used between crossmembers 3 & 4 for the U-bolt

Regards,
Dave

Yes Dave - note that the plates for cross member 1 were to simply make it backward compatible with earlier installations that used u-bolts there.

Hi,

Can you tell me what size flat head screws were used to install the sill plates?

Thanks,
Dave

So I have my 88-A platform with all new cross members fit together and perfectly square.

Now just to replace the rest of the bolts with rivets!

Excellent - looking very good. Do you have an idea what you would charge to build an 88-A for a customer? Or, just an estimate on the time you spent and costs?

Hi Neil,

I only made all new cross members 1-6.

The floor side members (AA-88091), Angle supports (AA-88061), the reinforcements and stake pockets on cross member #6 are all original.

It took me a while to get to this point, I would not be able to put a number on the hours.

I don't know if I am ready to build another 88-A, but I could supply any or all of the cross members. They are straight forward for me to make at this point.

If there is something I could help you with, I would be more than willing as you are always there for me and everyone else.

Regards,
Dave

Thanks Dave,
I am not looking for any platform parts currently. I would think that the #6 (rear cross member) is a part many could use. This cross member is frequently in poor condition. So, anyone looking could contact you.

Thanks Neil.

If anyone is interested, I do have #6 cross members available.

2 of them are made to the exact original dimensions except the top flange is 1/2" short.
I only have 1 inner shelf for these ($275 with the shelf, $250 without the shelf)

1 of them, a couple of the holes are off by 0.0625" (1/16") and the corner flanges are too long. ($125)

I can make more of the #6 cross members with the shelf, but without any of the above issues for $425.

Dave

Hi,

Quick rivet question. Could someone please check their original 88-A platform and make sure I have formed the correct rivet heads.

This is the front right corner.

I know based on an original that all the round head rivets in the AA-88074 "floor corner reinforcement" are correct, but I want to make sure that the single rivet for the side member (AA-88091) to the cross member #1 is supposed to be a waffle pattern as shown.

Thanks,
Dave
