Thrust washer for speedo drive gear

I have a Oct 28 AA with the worm drive. When I took the speedo drive assembly out of the end of the torque tube there wasn't a thrust washer between the bearing and the drive gear for the speedo. Is this normal? There was only a lock ring in the end of the tube to stop the gear from moving . This did have some play in between the snap ring and speedo gear. Can anyone tell me if this is normal. I don't want to take this out of the truck again.
