Spare Tire Carrier on 88-A Bed Trouble
Spare Tire Carrier on 88-A Bed Trouble
Hi All,
Awkward question…
I have an 88-A bed on my February ‘31 AA with 20” wheels.
Why does the spare tire not fit?
The “V” shaped spare wheel stops (AA-1474) are 20-3/8” on-center at their apex.
They rest against the rim like they should but they limit the end of the carrier from being close enough for the bolt to engage.
I believe that I have an AA-1015-C wheel carrier with "underbody installation #3" which should be correct for the Feb '31, 88-A platform bed.
If the hinge attachment on Crossmember #4 was lower, it might work??
Which component is incorrect?
Thanks
Dave

Your last picture shows the wheel is pushing against the wheel stop as it should. You don't say or explain what is not fitting?

Hi,
The tire rim contacts the spare wheel stops (AA-1474) before the carrier goes up far enough for the nut of the rear hinge (AA-1470-B??) to be able to be engaged.
I added some more photos.
Thanks
Dave

It appears that the wheel is facing downward, with the lock ring toward the carrier. Is this the correct orientation?

What is the height of the platform sills? What is the height of the wheel stops? A picture of the wheel carrier without the tire would be of interest.

Dave,
The sill heights and wheel stop lengths are correct after looking at my information. So, at this point, I don't have a clue. As Bud indicated, the wheel off-set might be the problem. It looks like you need to be able to raise the carrier strap about 1".
The swivel bolt is 4" (bottom of cross member to swivel bolt flange).

Re: Spare Tire Carrier on 88-A Bed Trouble
Are my hinges attached correctly to the frame? (Meaning, should they mount under the frame instead of on top of the frame as I have them)
With the roll on the back edge of the frame, it would make it difficult to mount the spare tire carrier hinge underneath without a spacer, but that would give me the room I would need.

Those hinges were installed as shown in your picture.
Please provide a picture of the rear swivel bolt installed on the rear crossmember.

I have the same situation with my spare carrier, it acts like it wants another inch of travel to engage the swivel bolt. I have early 31 rims without the later offset. I was able to flex the carrier with the use of a floor jack enough to engage them. Needles to say it is very snug.
