Top wood purpose in a solid cab

I have modified the roof on my 82-B cab by welding in a solid top/visor instead of the fabric top and bolt on visor. Now I'm adding the wood so it can be painted and reassembled.

My question is, "Do I need the top wood installed if the cab roof is solid?" What purpose would this wood serve if the fabric top does not need to be supported? Is there a headliner that needs the wood for attachment? I have not seen pictures of a headliner in these cabs.

Even the late 1931 had metal bracing running from side to side and wood across the back.

Thanks for the reply and the picture, Bob. Does anyone out there have details on how to build these upper braces? And, if anyone has pictures of the rest of the cab wood, please post them. I can get an idea of where to start when creating the wood pieces.

Another question, did Ford install the wood prior to painting, or afterwards?
