Split Rim Tire Installers in the SF Bay Area

Post by markp213 »

Hello fellow AA'ers,

Does anyone know of a place in the San Francisco Bay Area (or Central Valley) that can replace the tires on my AA? I purchased the six tires and tubes, but can not fine anyone around me that is willing to install them or know what I am talking about.

Thank you!

Reach out to a shop that sells tires for large trucks such as semi's. They will have a cage and the know how to safely mount them.

That's a good idea. I didn't think of that.

Thanks!

Paul:
I saw your request for help with getting tires mounted. I just went through this in Placerville, Ca. There is a tire shop up here that will do your Bud split rims for you. I just had them do 5 28 AA wire wheels for me. They have done several sets over the years and are very careful. Here is there info:

Sierra Nevada Tire
659 Main St.
Placerville, Ca 95667
530-622-4714

You will have to bring them up and drop them off. It usually takes a day or two. If you need any new tire flaps I have some extras.
Feel free to contact me with any questions at 530-647-2900

Before taking mine to a truck tire shop I assembled them and put just enough air in them to gently hold things in place. They put them in the cage and aired them up. Took about 10 minutes and charged me nothing.

Thanks Charlie.

If I don't find anyone local, I'll give them a call.

I did my own. Easy tires to mount. Just use caution inflating.

I just got off the phone with Rolling Stock Tires in San Francisco. They do install tires on split rims. https://www.google.com/search?q=truck+t ... 4901145550

I was able to locate a mobile commercial tire guy in my area. He came out to my place and replaced all six AA tubes and tires, and the four on my Model A pickup. Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. Much appreciated!

Just to clear up some tire rim terminology, but the AA's did not use "split rims". Split rims actually had a diagonal cut across the width of the rim itself and a solid one piece lock ring. These were very dangerous and usually were safer to mount the assembly to the wheel hub before airing them up. They were still dangerous and were eventually outlawed. With the style of wheels like most of our "AA's" use, you have a solid wheel with a groove on one side where a split lock ring fits into. These are still dangerous and by law require a tire cage to air them up in. Today most trucks run tubeless tires and don't have to worry about the dangerous lock rings coming off.

By the way, I grew up working in our trucking company's garage and fixed and mounted more tires than I want to remember.

I fully agree with Keith. But, if one searches "What are split rim wheels?" this results in:
Split rim wheels are different from standard one piece wheels. Spilt rims are multi-piece wheels, where the tyre is held in place by a locking ring. Split rims are not normally used on cars or light vehicles. They are however found on a number of larger vehicle types.
So, as is the case many times, the Internet has misleading information for some subjects.

To me, it looks like the AA wheel with removable flange is not shown. Is that how you see it Bob?

No exact matches but the RH looks similar. I have some BB rims that look close to he RH.
