Roller bearing removal from drums

Post by Boomer »

I've removed the lock rings from the rear drums on my '29 AA but don't want to damage anything trying to get the bearings/seals out. Any pointers on tools/tricks would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Drew

I doubt you can get the seals out without damaging them. I would just pry them out as they are usually shot anyway. Once the seals are out the bearings should slide right out. They are just caged rollers that run inside a race in the hub.

With the lock rings out try dropping the hub onto a piece of plywood from about three feet so it lands with the opening parrallel with the plywood. The weight of the bearings will push the seal out. you might have to do it 3 or 4 times.

Yes, I have used the above "drop" method and it works.

It took a dozen drops per hub but they came out as advertised.
Thanks!
