Grease fittings and tail pipe routing

Post by Robert Gray »

Two questions..The orifices for grease fittings have somehow gotten oversize and the fittings wont fit snugly. How repair? Second..does anyone have a photo of how the tail pipe on a 157 attaches to the frame? Mine seems to sit too far away from the frame for the stock clamps to work

Hello Robert,
Attached are some pictures showing the 1931 AA157 tail pipe and brackets. The '31 AA157 uses an AA muffler (an A mufler without the tail pipe). The tail pipe is a straight pipe an uses two muffler tail pipe clamps (unique to the AA157).

Regarding grease fittings. I got some fittings several years ago which were too small. It could be that this is also your problem.

Fellow AAers,

This subject got me to wondering, if I had the two tailpipe brackets for my 157-incher. So, out to the garage I went to sort through my stuff. Low and behold, still wrapped around the tailpipe were the two brackets in fine shape. Made my day!

Robert:

This afternoon, I cleared away a bunch of junk from an old frame I have to see if any brackets were still attached to it. No luck! If I run across any brackets, I'll let you know.

These tail pipe hangers are easy to make. All you need is a vise, hammer, measuring tape, 13/32" drill bit, length of 1/8" x 1" flat iron and of course the measurements. One could get close measurements from the above pictures. Someone may post them. I have non to measure, just the pictures above is all I need to make them. No one would know the differences between the ones I can make from store bought. The grease fitting holes are easy to repair also! Shelby, Louisiana.

Bob, There are a couple of ways to repair the orifice for the grease fittings. one way is Mac's A auto parts has an adpter to go back to original 5/16" drive-in fittings. You would have to drill and tap threads 1/8"pipe thread to do this. Another way is to use a small ball peen hammer, if you have a drive tool, insert the drive fitting in the tool, holding the tool in your hand, lightly peen all way round the fitting check the fit where it goes. If still loose peen the fitting again, you may have to repeat this several times, not to tight though. Next peer the orifice with the small peen hammer all way round. Then have the grease fitting in the drive tool line up fitting with orifice then drive it home. No one but you and I will ever know!!!!! Keep on Trucking! Shelby, Louisiana.

I know a guy who can make'em by the thousands if necessary. All he would need was a sample to go by. He currently makes similar brackets for old Harleys.

Neil can you send me the measurements on the clamps? i will make some for you guys , the best way would be to make a tracing so i can get it exact . looks from your picture at the top that there are two different clamps , i need the profile shape and the hole diameters and locations
