Engine Number?

Post by spectria »

The number clearly stamped on the raised boss just below the head gasket on the drivers side of my Mail Truck engine is LB19524.

Is this LONG BLOCK 19524? Possibly a replacement engine?

The number is original, the markings on the boss are clearly manufacturing results.

I just uncovered the Frame number after cutting the fender and Cab bolts to raise the Cab.

I have *AA 444X53X* . I need to try and raise the rest of it. Any guesses on what I have so far?

Frame number indicates a March '31 engine build date.
I would guess the engine is from an agriculture or industrial application and has been swapped in sometime in the past.
Ford sold engines to many other companys who put their own engine numbering on them.

If the surface of the number boss is nice and smooth the original number has been removed and a new number stampped in its place. The surface of the boss should match the rest of the engine block.

Thanks, Chris. That is what I meant by manufacturing results.
It appeared at first to be original markings.

Last night I took a grinder with a sanding pad to the face of the boss and up came other small numbers down low on the boss, but it was too late and dark to read them.

I plan on raising the numbers with etch and then I'll try and get posting photos for all to see.

Dam the area around the boss and pour on a little muriatic acid and it will bring out old numbers.

I think you are waisting your time! It is not the original engine anyway. The ID on the frame is the original. Knowing what the ID is on the engine does not provide any usable informaiton.

Thanks Neil, but I want to know everything I can about the past of this machine.

Besides, all I have is time, so I'm good.

I hope my being curious is OK?

This past weekend is really the first time I have ever torn down an A or AA engine, or taken a fender off, or found a REAL Serial number on the frame right where you guys said it would be, etc, etc...
I have been in the business since 1966, and as I said this is all a first for me. I have rebuilt maybe 1000 engines of all types, but never an A, hundreds of automatic and standard transmissions and transaxles, 4 wheel drives, diffs and rear ends, you name it, I have done it, but this is all NEW to me...
I hope it's OK to post my questions?

I have no problem with questions! I just ment that the re-stamped engine ID is not going to give you information about the original truck.

Dave:

I understand your interest. It's cool to know as much of the history of your own truck(s) as possible. Neil knows this and I know he concurs. He's absolutely correct though, in that, the wierd engine number won't assist you in identifying your truck. You might find it interesting that the number stamped on my AA's engine is R4M8082. It's got single stars stamped too. One directly to the left of the "R" and one directly to the right of the "2". My truck is an early '31 Stakebed LWB. Any idea what my number might mean?

Well the 8082 was the original name for the second Apple processor, I think, and the R4M might be...

Ah, hell, who knows, but it would cool to find out...
