Amature bidders on there running the price way up with 5 days left, then some guy snaps it up at the last minute. Probably friends of the seller!1crosscut wrote:http://www.ebay.com/itm/281080026746?ss ... 1423.l2649

Nope, your I eyes aren't deceiving you, The wear is so bad it is running over the top and the tops of the Worm Wheel are very thin. I don't know what kind of life is left in these teeth.SHELBY MESSER wrote:Does my eyes deceive me, but doesn't that gear have a lot of wear on it??????
And it may be one of the best out there...

I have to agree, However I would not buy one that I could not see all the teeth all the way around,1crosscut wrote:Actually I think the it is one of the nicer ones your going to find.

the reason being if this axle had been parked with 90w-140w EP oil which contains sulfur, this causes the bronze to soften causing rapid wear on one side, oils that are compatible with yellow metals must be used.
Here is a pic submitted by a poster some time ago, it shows the teeth are a little thinner at the top than the one on E-Bay, for us and our uses it will last for ever, it would be much cheaper to buy the newly made T worm gear at $375 than stripping old differentials looking a good used gear unless you get lucky as Dave did.
BTW Dave, thanks for the pics of the disassembled axle, I have searched a lot looking for adjustment specs and found nothing, I don't believe there are any adjustments such as shimming or pre-loading.

I have always wondered why they chose brass to make the gear from?

Re: High speed rear end advertised on ebay
Thanks Brian I'm glad that the pictures are helpful. I too have been wondering about setting the adjustments etc... on the worm drive. If anyone has any information on what if anything special needs to be done I would sure like to know. I just pulled the rear out from under my truck and will be opening up the differential to give it a good once over and replace seals etc... as needed. Hope what I find in this one is as good as the last one I got.

I don't have specific info on the Ford Worm gear, but Peugeot used this type of rear axle often and I rebuilt them.1crosscut wrote:Thanks Brian I'm glad that the pictures are helpful. All Tapered Roller Bearings must have pre-load, light pressure for them to run true and not vibrate in operation. This would be measured by turning torque at the worm gear. How this would be accomplished is out of my realm, as there are spider gears to account for in trying to use an axle to turn the worm gear.
If one knew the pre-load (probably 15 to 50 inch pounds) and they could account for required torque or loss through the Worm, then driving the input shaft (worm/pinion) could be used to measure it. Again, you would have to know the torque required to turn just the worm, then the loss in the gear engagement with the Worm Gear to feel the pre-load in the Worm Gear.
I did it by feel, and it worked, but guessing took a few years to master.
All of this assumes the engagement of the Worm and Worm gear are correct, not to deep, or too high (backlash) or off to a side.
Also about the proper lube:
