Is this cab really a 28?

Post by Roddy73 »

I'd like to change by cab from brantford since I can't find a wood kit and I found this for sale.

I know my cab is oddball but was there even a steel cab offered in 28?

Thanks

The back window looked 30/31 to me but the pillars and cowl don't look right. My friend thought it was cobbled together!

I would post that on Fordbarn. I'm thinking that the back of that cab is from a sedan. The body lines look like they are from a sedan. Just my $0.02.

It looks to me like a Frankenstein - the back part of the cab appears to be the rear part of a '28-'29 Tudor Sedan - note in the photos at the bottom of the rear it has the holes for a spare tire mount like a sedan. It'd be hard to mount a spare there between the cab and the pickup bed.

From production start thru August 1930, the 82-A closed cab was used on the A and AA commercial. My recommendation is to not waste time trying to find out details about the cab pictured above.

Ah so it is a mutt, thanks guys. I will look for an 82-A closed cab, I found one that looks like mine but there's metal over the wood, I think it's older. (I'll add a pic)

I'm slow but I get there eventually!haha

This photos is of a Brantford cab. They came in a number of configurations, all were wood clad with tin. They were used mostly for the 28-29 AA trucks in Canada. It is difficult to find a good one due to all the wood, most don't even have enough for patterns. They were built by the Brantford Coach and Body company in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. I am actually restoring one right now...you just about need to be a cabinet maker to work on these cabs.

Ok, mine must be missing the tin over the wood. They are a neat cab and I like the Canadian connection, but I know my limitations. I've watched a woodworker restore an austin ambulance's wood structure and it is a skill I don't have!

If there's anything you need Mark I can look for you, I suspect there's more brantford cabs around here than 82-A's

Your friend is correct. That is a cobbled up body. The Ford 28 29 cabs are very distinctive. In the "Legendary Model A Ford" book by Peter Winnewisser a real nice spread of a 29 AA Express truck that will show you the differences.

The Green Bible is not the best book for a Model AA. I have found some 1934,1935 parts books that have illistrations of the parts and part numbers. Many AA parts were long obsolete by the time the Green Bible came out.
