Books to help restore 28-M30 CC?

Post by Stakebed »

Can anyone recommend books or other sources to restore a 28-M30 closed cab? Like what hardware is used where, the correct hardware, the correct materials, how to do the roof and door posts, windows, etc.

Would the green Les Andrews book be of help to me?

I know I need to get the paint and finish guide for colors and what gets painted body colors.

Also I know the boards under the AA bed were painted this black creosote wood preservative stuff - whats a modern day equivalent?

Whats the best way to strip paint off the entirety of a cab including the underside? My guess is take it somewhere who can media blast it that knows what they are doing. If so how far would you dissemble it?

Heres my thoughts on the above:

remove the doors via hinge pins and remove the latches, window regulators, window, and the rim and anythign else that unscrews.
remove rear window frame and glass
remove the gas tank (i need to remove it anyways as i have a better one)
remove the cowl section from the cab (just a few more bolts since the gastank will be out) - or are there rivets holding it to the subframe???
Remove the windshield frame
remove dash rail
remove remaining wood pieces and bolts that used to hold the wood

Would you go any farther?? Would you remove the hinges from the cab and doors or just take the hinge pin out?

Also how is the best way to support everything so they can I assume tip it (maybe they will put up in sawhorses) to do the underside?

Then on the other end of the spectrum after blasting would you primer and paint everything separately then assemble? or would you do things like prime/paint edges of lets say the gastank to cowl to cab seams, let it dry, assemble with proper welt/antisqueak, then paint the rest of it? Same with the wood to metal surfaces? How do you paint inside the awkward little crevasses and seams on the underside and up under the "dash" and inside the doors?

Sorry for the billion questions but I want to do it right so 20 years from now it looks the same - no bubbled/cracked paint etc. Like I said if theres any publications or websites that can help me learn please let me know...Or if someones got the timeline photos of their cab rebuild I can learn from looking at those too.

Much appreciated in advance!

Look on the left side of the page, you need to click on each album one at a time to see all the pictures.
