lesson learned

Post by KimVanOrder »

So , the other day while getting the old truck ready for an other season, I changed the oil, greased it all , and then remembered that I saw some ware that the cam lob should have a touch of petroleum jelly on it. To lazy to walk all the way over to another building, I substituted a touch of grease. Well I made it to the coffee shop that day and on my way home it stopped. Had to be towed home. having no idea what went wrong I started in on it the next day. Decided to start with the ignition system assuming the condenser went bad I opened up the dist. and started to clean things up. The points were covered with grease and fouled. After the cleaning all was working again. So,,,, lesson learned, more is not better..

My shop teacher in college said that he used his own ear wax for cam lube as it didn't take much. ;-)

I have always heard to use Vaseline (petroleum jelly), but I wonder if dielectric grease would be a better choice. I don't think it was available in the 30's. Certainly not common as it is today
