Front Hub Dust Seal

Post by David R. » March 23rd, 2020, 5:15 pm

The front hubs on my truck appear to have something in the recess in the spindle that would act somewhat as a dust seal where the back of the hub fits. I don’t see anything listed in suppliers catalogs for this. What were these made of? Looks like it might have been leather or felt?

Bob, down in the recess of the part you pictured; there appears to be a ring of some type of fibrous material like leather or felt?

Well maybe, but it came out in one piece. It’s soaking in the tank now.

Does anyone LOOK at the Ford parts lists? Seams like a logical approach rather than speculation. AA-1190 is the front hub dust cover for the 1929 AA front spindles. A-1190 is listed for the A chassis and would apply to the 1928-er/29 AA's with A chassis front spindles. For 1930-1932 AA front hubs, cover AA-1190-B was used. There is no part like what is being speculated about.

Well here it is, out of the soak tank. Definitely home made, looks like from someones old felt hat.
I assume the grease fittings are pressed in the spindle. Got one I can’t get unclogged. How hard are they typically to get in and out?

Have you tried warming it with a torch and blowing compressed air through it?

I have a NOS aftermarket felt seal that fits the front of 28-29 AA Ford trucks (according to the box it came in). It's comprised of two thin steel washers and a felt seal that goes between them. I don't remember the company that made it. I'll have to dig it out to see.

Worked!

Looks like both spindles on this axle had the same attempt at a home made dust seal here. They are crudely cut out of heavy felt. Both also had enormous amounts of grease on brake linings. I had never seen this much grease in front wheels. Instead of just packing bearings, they must have completely filled hubs with grease.
