Model AA serial numbers

Post by Jared275 »

Does anyone know if all model aa engines were stamped *AA------------* or if some had a stamping *A------------*. Why I ask is I have a 29 and my block is stamped with a single A.

There was a period of time when they were just stamped with a single A.
I would have to check to find when but it seems part of '29 was included.
After the 4 speed was introduced it went back to AA.

An “A” or “AA” prefix was at the beginning of the engine number. The prefix and number is the engine ID. There was a star on each end of the ID. The “AA” prefix identified engines with a stronger clutch spring allowing the engine to be identified on the assembly line for installation into an AA chassis.

Note: for a three month period starting mid February 1928 (with engine ID A-26268) through mid May 1928 (with engine number 136,000 approximately) the AA truck clutch spring was the same as the Model A. During this period the engine ID had the “A” prefix. Refer to the “Service Letters” dated February 23rd and May 15th 1928.

So, all AA's would have originally had an engine ID with an AA prefix except for the three month period in 1928.
